Everyone is always communicating, whether effectively or not.
The person who flicks you off in road rage, robs a store, skips an important meeting, or provides brutally honest feedback…they are all communicating. Humans are complex, unique, and dynamic, and effective communication isn’t an innate skill. We now need leaders capable of being self-aware and developing the people skills that build trust, move people, inspire them, and empower them to be successful. This requires a different set of skills than the work responsibilities. Effective communication and relationships require more attention than ever.
Unfortunately, as companies grow and scale, they become less focus on the people skills and the interpersonal dynamics. The workplace suffers when leaders do not invest in their own growth and their people’s growth. Individuals need interpersonal skills to lead people and manage conflict and build a thriving organization. Compared to technical skills, interpersonal skills are comparatively more predictive of success at work.
Climbing out of this muck on your own is nearly impossible. Effective communication is not something we are born with. In fact, most of us have to deconstruct everything we know and start again.
